What is Probate?
Put simply, Probate is a term used generically to refer to the process of dealing with the estate of a deceased person. The purpose is to make sure all relevant taxes are collected, money owing to creditors is paid, debts owed to the deceased are collected, and the remaining assets from the estate are distributed to the relevant beneficiaries in accordance with their wishes.
It can be an incredibly complicated procedure, and with this, in mind, we have created this Probate and Estate Administration Guide to help explain what’s involved, and the terminology that you may hear or read.
Meet our Probate Team
Tom Foster – Head of Probate Services
Tom is a Chartered Tax Adviser who has been helping executors to resolve the tax affairs of estates for over 20 years. Tom has two degrees, two specialist tax qualifications and after obtaining Mercia’s certificate in probate and estate administration in 2018, Tom decided the time was right to set up a probate department at Lewis Brownlee.
Sarah Alexander – Head of Financial Administration
Sarah is Lewis Brownlee’s MD and FCA and FCCA qualified with over 25 years of experience in the profession. Sarah was the first person at Lewis Brownlee to obtain Mercia’s certificate in probate and estate administration. Sarah is responsible for overseeing the financial side of estate administration, and was responsible for introducing our thorough and safe payment approval system. We undertake a stringent due diligence process to ensure payments cannot be processed without the input of two qualified members of staff and the approval of the executor.
Georgina Stanley – Probate Services Manager
Georgina joined Lewis Brownlee in 2016, obtaining her ACA qualification in 2020. She really enjoyed the tax aspects of the course which led to her sitting and passing Mercia’s probate exams later in the same year. Georgina ensures estate bank accounts are reconciled on a monthly basis and helps with the preparation of the tax forms and the final estate accounts.
